2013 Conference Wrap Up
We had an incredible gathering of minds this year dedicated to furthering patient-centered integrative cancer care and producing more successful outcomes. This was the 11th Annual International IPT/IPTLD Integrative Cancer Care Conference held April 16-24, 2013, at the Sheraton Arlington just outside Dallas, Texas. The conference was sponsored and managed by Best Answer for Cancer Foundation, in support of the International Organization of Integrative Cancer Physicians (IOIP).
A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Constantine “Gus” Kotsanis and his dedicated team who were our hosts for this conference and pulled out all the stops to make this the best ever. The Kotsanis Institute, a spacious, state-of-the-art clinic, was the site for the IPTLD training and served as Executive Director Annie Brandt’s office away from home. The Institute is committed to the vision and the mission of the Best Answer for Cancer Foundation and it shows in everything they do. Most of all—we thank the Kotsanis team members for their talented assistance and wonderfully supportive attitude.
Our attendance increased again – from 198 attendees last year to 215 attendees this year. We are growing because consumers are demanding change, demanding better outcomes, and this annual conference is the cauldron for that change. Our member physicians empower patients to be involved in determining their personal “best answer for cancer” and promoting physician/patient awareness of kinder, gentler, yet profoundly effective, cancer treatment options that results in patients “thriving while surviving” during treatment and recovery. We want to take a moment to acknowledge those who traveled especially long distances to be with us:
- Dr. Joseph Brenner from Israel
- Agatha Chan from Hong Kong
- Prof. Thomas v. Dávid from Hungary
- Kunihiro Kitamura from Japan
- Dr. Jiin Ngu from Australia
- Dr. Kazuoki Nonaka from Japan
- Dr. Sachihiko Okuno from Japan

- Dr. Eugene Pretorius from South Africa

For the first time, we included breakout sessions for nurses. And we offered both Phase I and Phase II training sessions for IPT/IPTLD certification. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Sean Devlin who once again led the Phase I training, and to Dr. Kotsanis who led the in-depth Phase II training. The Kotsanis Institute offered their facility for the training; trainees got to participate in an active integrative medicine clinic. This conference offered Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits. The CME activity was planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) thru the Joint Sponsorship of the Institute for Medical Studies (IMS) and Best Answer for Cancer Foundation (BAFC). The Institute for Medical Studies is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. IMS designated this live activity for a maximum of 16 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Integrative oncology incorporates IPTLD and a number of complementary therapies, many of which were the focus of this year’s speakers at the conference.

For the third year in a row, we featured organic food and alkaline water, and purified air in the meeting spaces. To our knowledge, we are the only conference to offer our attendees this kind of healthy environment to support members’ approach to healing and knowledge of environmental medicine.
The Foundation and the IOIP has occasionally honored one of our physician members who has gone above and beyond the call of duty, one who has made a true and lasting difference to IPT and integrative medicine. We decided to make it more formal and start a process wherein each year we choose an IOIP Physician of the Year. Our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Richard Linchitz of New York, who along with his other many commitments in life, made time to serve on the Board of Directors of Best Answer for Cancer Foundation (BAFC) and on the Medical Advisory Board of International Organization of Integrative Cancer Physicians (IOIP).
The conference ended with mariachis serenading us at our Texas-styled fiesta dinner! It was a great way to unwind, form new relationships, and renew old acquaintances. Before leaving for the airport, we were treated to a VIP tour of the Texas Cowboys Stadium – the world’s largest domed structure.
This is THE conference for understanding the shift from the traditional one-size-fits-all approach to the emerging paradigm of enlightened cancer treatment that is more personalized and more patient-centered with an emphasis on better outcomes.
Together we are educating the medical community and the consumer about options and support available to overcome cancer and thrive.
Sincerely,
Best Answer for Cancer Foundation Planning Team
